Bariatric Surgery Associated with Decreased Stroke Risk

Obese people who underwent bariatric surgery to decrease their weight seemed to have an additional benefit in the form of a considerably reduced risk of stroke, suggests new research.

Investigators used Mariner, an all-payer claims database, and noted that among the patients who underwent either sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass between 2010 and 2019, the risk of stroke during the first year following surgery was 0.05%, as compared to 0.26% in a cohort of similar patients who did not undergo the surgery. It was noted that the differences continued after 3 years (0.13% vs 0.43%) and 5 years (0.21% vs 0.59%).
