Elderly doctor and wife robbed at knifepoint at Lonavala house

In the early hours of Thursday, a 75-year-old doctor along with his 68-year-old wife was tied up and robbed by an armed gang at knifepoint at their Lonavala house in Pune. The robbers looted cash and jewellery worth almost Rs 66 lakh.

 

Teams of Pune Rural Police have started a search for this armed gang, reported to be having at least 13 members. The Pune Rural Police officials informed that the gang of robbers attacked around 1 am when Dr. Hiralal Khandelwal and his wife Vijaya were sleeping on the first floor of their house while three members of the staff were sleeping in their ground floor clinic.

 

Inspector Dilip Pawar, Lonavala Town police station, said that initial investigations have suggested that the robbers entered the first floor of the house through an open window. Six of them entered the house, while others were outside the building keeping a watch. The couple was tied up and gagged, and the robbers looted them of jewelry and cash at knifepoint. The couple informed the police that the robbers fled with Rs 50 lakh cash and jewelry worth Rs 16 lakh.

 

After the robbers fled around 3 am, the incident was reported to the police. Vivek Patil, Additional Superintendent with Pune Rural Police said that a search had been initiated for the gang.

 

Navneet Kanvat, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Lonavala Division, said that the footage obtained from security cameras has led them to conclude that at least 13 people were part of the gang. The police is trying to determine the entry and exit routes of the robbers and the mode of transport that was used by them. The couple have not sustained any serious injuries.
