Convalescent Plasma Associated with Reduced Mortality in Blood Cancer Patients with COVID-19

According to a retroactive cohort study published in JAMA Oncology, if patient received convalescent plasma therapy, the probability of endurance was enhanced for patients with hematologic cancers hospitalized for COVID-19.

After regulating for potential confounders, investigators noted that convalescent plasma therapy was tied to enhanced 30-day mortality (HR 0.60) in these patients, when linked with untreated controls. The relationship continued after propensity score matching.

The data was achieved from the COVID-19 and Cancer Consortium and the primary endpoint was death within 30 days of COVID diagnosis. Total, 966 patients were involved in the study, out of which 143 (14.8%) expected convalescent plasma therapy, while the remaining 823 (85.2%) constituted the untreated control group. There were total, 223 deaths reported within 30 days of COVID-19 diagnosis. The crude mortality rate was 13.3% in convalescent plasma therapy group, which was significantly lower than that in those who did not receive the treatment (24.8%)… (Medpage Today)
