Britain registered 11,007 new daily COVID-19 infections on Thursday, as the emergence of the Delta variant took the numbers over 10,000 for the first time in a period of 4 months (since late February).

The UK government had announced that steps to ease restrictions will be delayed on account of the spread of the new variant. The government stated that a 4-week delay would enable it to fully vaccinate millions of more people in the country.

The death rate continues to remain low, with 19 deaths reported on Thursday. A government report was released on Thursday which indicated that cases were increasing rapidly across England, driven largely by unvaccinated people.
