Suicide accounts for 1 in 100 deaths globally

Suicide continues to be among the leading causes of death globally, suggest latest estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), which have been published in “Suicide worldwide in 2019”

More people lose their lives due to suicide than because of HIV, malaria or breast cancer, or war and homicide, each year. In 2019, over 700 000 individuals died by suicide, which amounts to one in every 100 deaths. As a result, the WHO has developed new guidance in order to help nations improve suicide prevention and care.

In people aged 15-29 years, suicide was found to be the fourth leading cause of death after road injury, tuberculosis and interpersonal violence. The rates may vary between countries, regions, and between males and females… (WHO, June 17, 2021)
