If a doctor does not have his state medical council registration number in his clinic, but only has it on his prescription pad, it constitutes professional misconduct.

Regulation 1.4.1 of the MCI Code of Ethics Regulations, 2002 states: “Every physician shall display the registration number accorded to him by the State Medical Council/Medical Council of India in his clinic and in all his prescriptions, certificates, money receipts given to his patients.”

If the doctor fails to display the registration number that has been issued to him by the State Medical Council or the Medical Council of India in his clinic, prescriptions and certificates etc., or violates the provisions of regulation 1.4.2, this amounts to professional misconduct and disciplinary action can be taken against him (Regulation 7.3 of MCI Code of Ethics).

Regulation 1.4.2 states: “Physicians shall display as suffix to their names only recognized medical degrees or such certificates/diplomas and memberships/honours which confer professional knowledge or recognizes any exemplary qualification/achievements.”
