COVID-19 tied to higher clot risk in veterans having IBD

A case crossover study of veterans has revealed that older men with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) had greater odds of developing venous thromboembolism (VTE) after a COVID-19 infection.

Among IBD patients in the VA health system, COVID-19 infection was found to be linked with eight-times increased odds of developing VTE (OR 8.15). When restricted to patients taking chronic anticoagulant therapy, investigators noted no significant association between COVID-19 and VTE in this group of patients (OR 0.63). There was a considerably higher risk of developing VTE among patients who were not on anticoagulant therapy prior to COVID-19 infection (OR 14.31).
