AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine tied to rare neurological disorder

Eleven individuals who had received the AstraZeneca-Oxford coronavirus vaccine developed a rare neurological disorder - Guillain-Barre syndrome – reported clinicians in India and England.

Seven cases have been reported from a medical center in Kerala, where nearly 1.2 million people got the AstraZeneca jab, called Covishield in India, while four cases have been reported from Nottingham, UK, from an area where about 7 lakh individuals were administered the shot. All of these 11 cases had received the COVID jab 10-22 days earlier. The cases have been reported in two studies, published in the journal Annals of Neurology.

The benefits of vaccination considerably outweigh the risk of this relatively rare outcome, estimated as 5.8 per million; however, researchers suggest that clinicians must be aware of this possible adverse event… (ET Healthworld – PTI, June 23, 2021)
