A study done by ICMR researchers, northeast and the Assam Medical College (AMC) in Dibrugarh stated that a single dose of the Covishield vaccine is sufficient to protect recovered Covid-infected people who have achieved immunity.

Both males and females between 18 and 75 years of age were studied by the experts. The results revealed that the second dose of the vaccine did not raise the antibody titre as compared to the first dose. It was observed that the IgG antibody titre was significantly higher in earlier seropositive participants receiving only one dose of vaccine as compared to the seronegative group receiving both doses of vaccine.

Thus, the study proposed that a single dose of the vaccine could be enough to yield an effective immune response in previously infected patients, even with moderate infection.

During the study, the IgG antibodies were estimated at three different time intervals, pre-vaccination, 25-35 days post first shot, and then 25-35 days post-second shot. A total of 121 participants were included in the study to evaluate the immune response to Covishield in previously infected or uninfected people. The study is published in a preprint medRxiv journal.

Dr. Gayatri Gogoi, Assistant professor of pathology at AMC, said that as per their study, many of the recipients might not need a second shot. They will be going for an extended study on a larger scale from next week onwards.
