WHO pleads for vaccines as poorer countries lack doses

While the affluent nations are opening up societies and vaccinating young people who do not have a high risk from COVID-19, the poorest countries still lack doses, said the World Health Organization.

WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the situation in Africa is very dangerous as new cases and deaths rose by around 40% last week in comparison with the previous week, amid the spread of the Delta variant globally. The COVAX initiative, which is run by the GAVI vaccine alliance and the WHO, has delivered 90 million COVID-19 vaccine doses across 132 countries since February; however, it has faced supply constraints since India withheld vaccine exports… (Reuters, June 26, 2021)
