Delta, Kappa variants rise to around 17% of cases in Italy

The Delta and Kappa variants of the coronavirus have increased in Italy over the past month and account for around 17% of total COVID-19 cases in the country, stated the national health institute ISS.

It stated that the Delta variant, first identified in India, was becoming dominant. The institute mentioned that cases of the Kappa and Delta variants increased from 4.2% in May to 16.8% in the month of June, according to data obtained on June 21. Anna Teresa Palamara, director of ISS Infectious Diseases Department, said that like the rest of Europe, the Delta variant was becoming dominant in Italy.

The institute further stated that the Alpha coronavirus variant continues to be the most widespread in the country, accounting for around 74.9% of the cases… (Reuters, June 25, 2021)
