Delta Plus, a new variant of the COVID-19 virus, was first detected on 11th June and has been classified as a variant of concern. Until now, 51 cases of Delta Plus have been found across 12 states in India, with the maximum cases reported in Maharashtra.

Dr. N K Arora, head of COVID-19 Working Group of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI), said that the Delta Plus variant has a greater affinity to lung tissues than the other strains. However, this does not mean that it is more infectious or can cause severe disease.

The impact of the new strain will be clear if more cases are identified. However, the disease seems to be mild in those people who have received either a single or two doses of the vaccine. He added that the number of cases of Delta plus variant might be more as many asymptomatic individuals can carry the virus and spread it.

The genomic surveillance component has identified it correctly and early enough. States have already been told about this variant of concern and they have started making plans for the districts where the virus is reported, in order to curb its spread. Vaccination needs to be increased in these districts.

On being asked whether the Delta plus variant can fuelthe 3rd wave of COVID-19, Dr. Arora said that waves are associated with new variants so there is a possibility, but whether it will lead to a third wave is difficult to answer as it will depend on several things.
