Doctors have to follow Regulation 2.3 of the MCI Code of Medical Ethics. They must keep the patient and his/her relatives well-informed.

Regulation 2.3 of the MCI Code of Ethics states that a physician must never amplify or play down the gravity of a patient’s condition. He must make sure that the patient, or his relatives have the knowledge of the patient’s condition which will serve the best interests of the patient and the family. Regulation 3.2 states that in every consultation, the benefit to the patient is of utmost significance. All physicians involved in the case must be frank with the patient and his attendants.

Patients have the right to be informed about their illness and to have their medical records explained, as stated by the Consumer Guidance Society of India. The NABH/DMAI Patients’ Charter on Patients’ rights also suggests that patients must be informed about the risks, benefits, expected treatment outcomes and possible complications so that they can make informed decisions, and must be involved in the care planning and delivery process.
