About 70% of Australians Undergo COVID-19 Restrictions as Delta Variant Rises

Outbreaks of the more contagious Delta variant across Australia have led to imposition of lockdown in Sydney and renewed restrictions in other parts.

Nearly 18 million Australians, which is close to 70% of the population, have been subjected to some form of lockdown or COVID-related restrictions as the country fights COVID-19 outbreaks in almost every state or territory. Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said that the country was going through a critical time in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Sydney imposed a two-week lockdown over the weekend, while Darwin announced a two-day shutdown. Queensland state has reimposed mask mandate and home gatherings have been limited in certain areas, including Brisbane.
