Indian doctors have stated that parents must monitor their children for symptoms of a rare inflammatory condition several weeks after recovering from COVID-19 infection.

Children who had had asymptomatic COVID-19 continue to have a risk of suffering from a multi-system inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) 4 to 6 weeks after the infection. In India, there have been reports of hospitalization in children with symptoms of breathlessness, low blood pressure, and a positive test for COVID-19 antibodies, indicating past infection.

Dr. SP Kalantri, Medical superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, said that the condition is worrisome and they don’t know the depth of this problem.

The extent of India’s MIS-C cases is not clearly known as the country is still recovering from a deadly second wave. Almost 2,000 cases of MIS-C were reported in the first wave as per data from the Indian Academy of Paediatrics Intensive Care Chapter.

Dr. Aarti Kinikar, who is a pediatrician in Pune, said that 30 such cases have been reported since April, 13 of them were hospitalized and most of them suffered myocarditis.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 35 deaths and 3,742 cases of MIS-C till 3rd May, half of them being in children between 5 and 13 years of age. Parents are advised to immediately contact a doctor if children have symptoms such as fever, stomach pain, blood shot eyes, diarrhea, fatigue, chest tightness or pain, headache, neck pain, low blood pressure, rash, and vomiting. Immediate emergency care should be sought if they face troubled breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, confusion, inability to wake or stay awake, and pale, gray, or blue-colored skin, lips, or nail beds.
