Covaxin booster may work on coronavirus variants, says ICMR-NIV

Scientists at the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, have said that a booster dose of Covaxin COVID-19 vaccine may offer long-term protection against the virus. 

Several countries are evaluating the option of a booster dose against COVID with other vaccines. India is also exploring the same, mentioned Priya Abraham, director of ICMR-NIV, adding that Covaxin could be more effective when it comes to variants. The vaccine could be useful as a booster as both the antibodies and the cells of the immune system, which are mounted by the vaccine, can recognize and neutralize more viral proteins, in addition to the spike protein.
