In June, the Delta variant of coronavirus was responsible for almost all Covid infections in Madhya Pradesh. A genome sequencing report indicated every sample sent from MP in June was found to be a Delta variant— the mutation of concern worldwide.

The Delta’s share in tested samples from MP has risen from 57% in April to 69% in May and a huge 100% in June, as per the report from the National Centre of Disease Control (NCDC).

In MP, the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7) was predominant till March. Currently, the delta is the biggest factor behind the increasing cases of COVID-19. Out of the 1,332 reports which were received by MP from NCDC, 458 (34%) were found to be Delta.

Health commissioner, Akash Tripathi said that Delta is the predominant variant for the last three months and Delta-plus is detected in only eight cases in MP. They have sent around 2,000 samples to NCDC for genome sequencing, based on certain parameters such as severe infection, post-vaccination infection, hospital stay, and comorbidities.
