A doctor is free to choose his patient, but once he has taken charge, he must attend to any emergency pertaining to the case.

Every patient has the right to expect continuity of care. Regulation 2.4 of the MCI Code of Ethics Regulations 2002 states that a doctor can choose whom he will serve. However, he must respond to any request made for his assistance in an emergency situation. Once a doctor has undertaken a case, he must not neglect the patient. Also, he should not withdraw from the case without giving adequate notice to the patient and his family or caregivers. A medical practitioner should not commit an act of negligence that may rob the patient of necessary medical care.
