Novel Oral Inhibitor May Attenuate Intestinal Damage in Patients with Celiac Disease

According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, a novel oral inhibitor of transglutaminase 2 blocks gluten-induced mucosal damage in patients with celiac disease. 

Investigators evaluated the safety and efficacy of three different doses of ZED1227. Adult patients with controlled celiac disease randomly received 10 mg (41 patients), 50 mg (41 patients), and 100 mg (41 patients) doses of the novel drug, while 40 patients were given a placebo. Among these patients, 35, 39, 28, and 30, respectively, had sufficient duodenal biopsy samples for evaluation. There was significant attenuation of mucosal damage in all three treatment arms. The change in the average ratio of villus height to crypt depth in the 10 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg groups was 0.44, 0.49, and 0.48, respectively, in comparison with placebo… (Medscape)
