Israel has reported that there has been a drop in the effectiveness of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in preventing infections and symptomatic disease; however, the vaccine continues to be highly effective in preventing serious COVID-19.

The drop in vaccine effectiveness came about at a time when the Delta variant is spreading and the social distancing restrictions were ended in the country. Vaccine effectiveness for prevention of infection as well as symptomatic disease declined to 64% since June 6. However, it was 93% effective at preventing hospitalizations and serious illness.
