The UK Health Ministry said that a new COVID-19 strain called ′Lambda′ has arrived and is more dangerous than the Delta variant. It is detected in more than 30 countries in the last 4 weeks. It had also tweeted that the Lambda strain is originated from Peru, a country having the highest mortality rate in the world. Also, six cases of the Lambda strain are detected in the UK to date. The researchers are concerned about this variant is more infectious than the Delta variant.

Lambda strain was reported in approximately 82 percent of the COVID-19 case samples in May-June in Peru, mentioned by the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO).

Public Health England in the UK has reported a few cases caused by Lambda and recognized it as having potential increased transmissibility or increased resistance to neutralize antibodies.

Jairo Mendez, PAHO′s Regional Advisor, said that on 30th June it was detected in 8 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean and sporadically in other countries. He further stated that there was no clear evidence yet that it was a more transmissible virus.

The Lambda variant has arrived when Europe is already fighting against the Delta variant. Earlier, The World Health Organisation has termed the Delta variant as a ′variant of concern′.
