Lambda variant of coronavirus not reported in India so far

The Lambda variant of coronavirus has not been detected in India thus far, said sources.

Dr Pragya Yadav, chief of the National Institute of Virology′s Maximum Containment Facility, said that Lambda variant has been found in 30 countries so far, and was first detected in Peru in December last year. The number of cases reported due to this variant is rising in several countries, pointing to its high transmissibility. 

A study has shown that the Lambda variant is susceptible to antibodies evoked after mRNA vaccine and convalescent serum could neutralize the variant, said Dr Yadav. The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated the Lambda variant as a ′Variant of Interest′.
