Variants winning the race against COVID vaccines: Cautions WHO head

Coronavirus variants, such as Delta, are winning the race against vaccines, stated the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. He held a lack of equitable vaccine production and distribution accountable.

WHO chief said that crossing four million deaths due to COVID-19 globally was tragic, adding that the figures underestimate the overall death toll due to the virus. He cautioned that several countries are witnessing a surge in cases and hospitalization, while affluent countries with high vaccination rates were lifting restrictions on public health measures as if the pandemic was over.

There is an acute shortage of oxygen and treatments and the situation is steering a ‘wave of death’ in certain parts of Africa, Asia and Latin America. WHO chief urged G20 leaders to urgently work towards ending the acute stage of the pandemic and extending the necessary funding to facilitate equitable production and distribution of health tools… (UN, July 7, 2021)
