Unacceptably high prevalence of syphilis among men who have sex with men: Study

A new study points to the unacceptably high prevalence of syphilis among men who have sex with men worldwide, and emphasizes the need to advance progress towards eliminating the disease as a public health threat by the year 2030. The study is titled “Prevalence of syphilis among men who have sex with men: A global systematic review and meta-analysis from 2000 to 2020.” 

The study was led by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and has been published in the Lancet Global Health. It puts forward the first estimates of global syphilis prevalence among men who have sex with men.The global pooled prevalence of syphilis among men who have sex with men has been estimated at 7.5% from 2000-2020, compared to 0.5% among men in the general population, as per the latest estimate of syphilis among men in the general population in 2016… (WHO, July 9, 2021)
