FDA Approves Finerenone for Slowing Kidney Disease in Type 2 Diabetes

The US FDA has granted approval for the anti-mineralocorticoid agent finerenone to slow down the progression of chronic kidney disease in type 2 diabetes patients.

The drug received approval for reducing the risk of decrease in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, hospitalization for heart failure and non-fatal myocardial infarction among adult patients with chronic kidney disease with type 2 diabetes. The drug is; however, contraindicated in patients with adrenal insufficiency and in patients who are being simultaneously treated with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors.
