Baricitinib tied to reduction in 30-day mortality among older patients hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia

A study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society has shown that treatment with baricitinib was linked with a reduction in 30-day mortality among patients 70 years of age or older, who were hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia. There was a higher absolute risk reduction compared to propensity score-matched younger patients, noted the study.

There was a significant reduction in death from any cause by 48% in patients aged 70 or above treated with baricitinib, with an 18.5% reduction in 30-day absolute mortality risk in comparison with propensity score-matched controls (20.5% vs 38.5%). Even among patients aged < 70 years, a reduction in death by 54% (7.0% vs 15.1%) was noted in comparison with propensity score-matched controls, for a reduction of 8.1% in 30-day absolute mortality risk… (DG Alerts)
