Flu vaccine protects against severe effects of COVID-19: Study

A large-scale study suggests that individuals who are vaccinated against influenza may have a partial protection against severe effects of COVID-19, and appear to be less likely to require emergency care.

An evaluation of around 75,000 COVID-19 patients worldwide indicated that the annual flu vaccine could diminish the risk of stroke, sepsis and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) among patients with COVID-19. COVID-19 patients who had received a flu shot also had lesser odds of visiting the emergency department and be admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Devinder Singh, a professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, US, said that if this research is corroborated by prospective randomized clinical trials, it can potentially decrease the burden of the disease globally… (ET Healthworld – PTI, July 12, 2021)
