Remdesivir, HCQ have no antiviral effect against COVID-19, finds study

The ′NOR-Solidarity′ study, an independent, add-on, randomized controlled trial to the World Health Organization (WHO) Solidarity trial has revealed that remdesivir and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) exhibited no antiviral activity among hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Norway.

Published in Annals of Internal Medicine, the study randomized 181 hospitalized patients in 23 hospitals in Norway to receive remdesivir, HCQ, or standard of care. Investigators assessed the effects of the drugs on all-cause, in-hospital mortality, degree of respiratory failure and inflammation, and viral clearance in the oropharynx. The trial noted that neither of the two drugs had an impact on viral clearance in hospitalized patients. There were no significant differences between treatment groups in in-hospital mortality, and the two drugs did not affect the degree of respiratory failure or inflammation… (ET Healthworld – PTI, July 14, 2021)
