Case of human monkeypox confirmed in a U.S. traveler

A case of human monkeypox has been confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Texas Department of State Health Services in a U.S. resident who has recently traveled from Nigeria to the United States. 

The individual is admitted in a Dallas hospital and the CDC is working with the airline as well as state and local health officials to contact passengers and other people who may have come in contact with the affected individual during two different flights - Lagos, Nigeria, to Atlanta on July 8, and Atlanta to Dallas on July 9.

Travelers had to wear masks on the flights as well as in the airports. So, the risk of spread of monkeypox through respiratory droplets to other people appears to be low… (CDC, July 16, 2021)
