Complications Seen in Younger COVID-19 Patients Too

According to a large UK prospective study, about half of the patients, irrespective of their age, who were hospitalized with COVID-19, developed at least one complication, which could have a significant impact on their ability to take care of themselves after being discharged.

Investigators assessed over 73,000 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 from January through August 2020. Around 50% of them developed at least one complication, varying from 39% in the 19-49 years age group, to 51% among the older patients. The most common complications were renal, complex respiratory and systemic. The complications had a persistent impact on patient’s health, making 27% of them less able to take care of themselves following discharge. This included 13% of those in the 19-29 years age group.
