Around two-thirds of Indians above the age of six years, i.e., around 67.6% of the population, have antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, the government announced while sharing the results of the fourth sero survey.
The government further stated that nearly 40 crore people are still vulnerable to the infection, and urged the people to get vaccinated if they are eligible. ICMR’s head Dr Balram Bhargava said that the results of the fourth sero survey indicate that there is a ray of hope; however, we can’t be complacent. COVID-appropriate behavior must be maintained, he added.
In the survey involving 36,227 individuals, which included 7,252 healthcare workers, done across 70 districts in 21 states in June and July, 67.6% of the people over the age of six were found to have COVID-19 antibodies. More than 50% of 8,691 children aged 6-17 years also had the antibodies. This was the first national survey that looked for antibodies in people below 18 years of age… (NDTV, July 20, 2021)
