The daily new COVID-19 cases in Tokyo surpassed 3,000 for the first time on Wednesday.

Tokyo has been under a virus state of emergency amid the Olympics and recorded 3,117 fresh cases. Governor Yuriko Koike urged the people to avoid unnecessary outings. The vaccination program in Japan had started slowly, and slightly more than 25% of the population has received two vaccine doses thus far. Koike urged young individuals to cooperate and get vaccinated. 

The state of emergency in Tokyo puts limits on bar and restaurant opening hours and prohibits them from selling alcohol. However, experts have cautioned that compliance is declining and cases are rising among the young.
