After Kerala, COVID surge in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu

While Kerala registered over 22,000 new COVID-19 cases for the third consecutive day, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu also reported a surge in new cases on Thursday, with India’s daily case number rising to around 45,000, which is the highest in 22 days.

The country registered 44,681 new cases on Thursday. Besides the southern states, Maharashtra also recorded a slight rise in cases, as it recorded 7,242 new infections on Thursday.

Kerala reported 22,064 new infections on Thursday, while the case numbers in Karnataka crossed the 2,000 mark after 19 days. A total of 2,052 cases were reported from Karnataka, up from 1,531 on the previous day. Daily cases and positivity rates have shown a spike in districts that border Kerala, as well as in Bengaluru. Karnataka has therefore declared the Dakshina Kannada district a ‘red zone’. There were 396 new COVID cases in the district even as the tally in Bengaluru Urban increased to 505, from 376 on the previous day.

Tamil Nadu recorded an increase after a span of 69 days. It reported 1,859 new cases on Thursday, compared to 1,756 on the previous day. The daily case count in the state of Maharashtra surpassed 7,000 after 7 days.
