U.S. will not lock down despite Delta-driven spike in cases: Fauci

Top U.S. infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci has said that the United States will not lock down to control the COVID-19 pandemic but “things are going to get worse” as the Delta variant continues to drive the spike in cases, predominantly among the unvaccinated.

Fauci said that a sufficient proportion of people in the U.S. have now been vaccinated to avoid lockdowns. As per a Reuters analysis, the average number of new COVID infections reported across the country has nearly doubled in the past 10 days. 

Fauci stated that there are 100 million individuals in the U.S. who are eligible for vaccination and are not getting vaccinated. Around 58% of Americans have been administered at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, ranging from as high as 76% in Vermont to as low as 40% in Mississippi… (Reuters, August 1, 2021)
