COVID-19 an Independent Risk Factor for Heart Attack, Stroke

A study conducted in Sweden has yielded the strongest evidence that COVID-19 is an independent risk factor for acute myocardial infarction (MI) and ischemic stroke.

The risk for acute MI and ischemic stroke was found to increase by around eight times and six times, respectively, in the first week after the onset of COVID-19, when day 0, or the day of exposure, was included in the analysis. However, when day 0 was excluded from the analysis, the risk for acute MI and stroke was still shown to escalate by around threefold. The findings are published online July 29 in The Lancet.
