Metabolic Surgery Improves Quality of Life in Diabetes Patients

A new study has suggested that patients with type 2 diabetes who underwent metabolic surgery had improvement in general health, mobility, as well as energy, and had less pain and diabetes-related concerns when compared to similar patients who underwent intensive medical therapy over a 5-year period.

Among 104 patients included in the Surgical Treatment and Medications Potentially Eradicate Diabetes Efficiently (STAMPEDE) trial, participants who underwent surgery reported having better quality of life, in particular, the diabetes-related aspects of life, compared to medical therapy, in annual responses to questionnaire.

Around a third of patients who were subjected to surgery had long-term remission of their type 2 diabetes (A1c< 6.5% off diabetes medications) and more than half of them reported having good glycemic control (A1c < 7%), noted researchers in an article published online in Annals of Surgery… (Medscape)
