WHO calls for halt on booster doses in order to vaccinate people in poorer countries

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for a pause on COVID-19 booster vaccines at least till the end of September.

WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated that a halt on booster vaccines would enable vaccination for at least 10% of the population in every country. Countries like Israel and Germany have announced that they will administer a third vaccine dose to their people. However, the WHO chief cautioned that the world’s poorer nations are not able to keep up.

The WHO has stated that low-income nations have been able to administer a mere 1.5 doses for every 100 individuals owing to lack of supply. Dr Tedros added that there is a need for a reversal now and the majority of vaccines should be given to lower income countries… (BBC, August 5, 2021)
