Long-lasting symptoms of COVID infection rare in children, says study

A large study conducted in the UK has revealed that most children who develop COVID-19 symptoms usually recover after six days, and only a few experience symptoms beyond four weeks. 

The study assessed data obtained through a smartphone app, reported by parents and carers. It provides the first detailed account of COVID illness in symptomatic school-aged children. Professor Emma Duncan, lead author, from King′s College London, said that the number of children who have long-lasting symptoms of COVID-19 infection is low. However, a few of them may have long illness. 

The children were reported to be ill for an average of six days and on an average, had three symptoms in the first week of illness. The study validated that COVID-19 manifests as a mild illness in children. The findings are published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health… (ET Healthworld – TOI.in, August 4, 2021)
