On Friday, China reported the highest daily COVID-19 case count in its current outbreak, largely driven by a rise in locally transmitted infections.

The country registered 124 fresh confirmed COVID-19 cases in the mainland for August 5, up from 85 cases on the previous day, reported the National Health Commission. Among the new confirmed cases, 80 were locally transmitted, rising from 62 cases a day earlier. The local cases were fueled by a spike in cases in eastern Jiangsu province, where 61 new infections were confirmed for August 5, compared 40 cases on the previous day. The new infections were largely reported from Yangzhou city. The country also reported 58 new asymptomatic cases, which are not classified as confirmed infections in the country, compared to 54 a day earlier.
