An eight-year-old boy was brought to a physician with nasal congestion, itching, rhinorrhea and sneezing, along with coughing and hoarseness of voice after eating fruits and vegetables. His parents reported that symptoms usually appeared after eating certain foods like soybeans and apples.

The child had a history of atopic dermatitis that had first appeared during infancy. His family had recently moved into a newly built house at the foot of a mountain, post which he had been diagnosed with cedar pollinosis. His tests for Bet v1 and the pathogenesis-related protein-10 (PR-10) of the corresponding foods were positive – he was diagnosed with Pollen Food Allergy Syndrome (PFAS).

The child was prescribed a second-generation antihistamine for 2 weeks-to be administered once daily in the morning under fasting conditions. Parents were advised to avoid foods that exacerbated symptoms and to restrict outdoor excursions for a few days.

After two weeks of therapy, nasal symptoms – such as rhinorrhea, congestion and itching considerably reduced. Parents confirmed that the child had undisturbed sleep at night and did not exhibit daytime drowsiness. The treatment was continued up to 12 weeks, following which it was observed that the child’s coughing and hoarseness of voice notably reduced and his attentiveness and school performance seemed to have improved. Overall, the drug was well tolerated and by avoiding exposure to triggers, the recurrence of symptoms could be prevented.
