Guinea has confirmed a case of the Marburg virus disease, the first case of the deadly virus in West Africa, stated the World Health Organization.

Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa, said that the Marburg virus can spread far and wide and must be stopped in its tracks. Officials in Guinea identified the case in the southern Gueckedou prefecture. A WHO statement said that for the first time, Marburg, a highly infectious disease, has been detected in the country, and in West Africa.

The discovery comes only two months after Guinea’s second outbreak of Ebola was declared over by the WHO, which started last year.
