Myocarditis in Adolescents Following COVID Vaccine is Mild

An early case series from Boston has shown that mild myocarditis can be a rare complication following COVID-19 vaccination in adolescents, as has been seen in adults.

It was noted that adolescents who developed heart inflammation following COVID vaccination usually had a benign course, and the symptoms resolved without treatment. However, one patient developed persistent borderline low left ventricular (LV) function. Investigators at Boston Children′s Hospital estimated that for males aged 12 to 29 years, vaccination prevents 11,000 COVID-19 cases, 560 hospitalizations, 138 admissions to the intensive care unit, and 6 deaths, in comparison with 39 to 47 anticipated cases of myocarditis. So, in spite of the myocarditis risk associated with vaccination, the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks in this population. The case series has been published in JAMA Cardiology… (Medscape)
