Study says COVID-19 during pregnancy tied to higher risk of preterm birth

A study published in The Lancet Regional Health - Americas suggests that the risk of having a very preterm birth, and of any preterm birth appears to be higher in individuals infected with COVID-19 during pregnancy.

Investigators at University of California (UC), San Francisco noted that the risk of very preterm birth was 60% higher among women infected with COVID-19 at some point during pregnancy. Additionally, the risk of any preterm birth or giving birth at <37 weeks was found to be 40% higher among those with COVID-19 infection. Among individuals who also suffered from hypertension, diabetes and/or obesity along with COVID-19, the risk of preterm birth increased to 160%. Latinx, American Indian/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander individuals, as well as people with public insurance, were shown to have disproportionately higher rates of COVID-19 infection during pregnancy… (ET Healthworld – PTI, August 10, 2021)
