Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors have been shown to be linked with low amyloid burden and slower cognitive decline in a new retrospective study.

The study included 282 patients with Alzheimer′s disease with cognitive impairment and positive amyloid PET scans. Of these, patients who used DPP-4 inhibitors for the treatment of diabetes were found to have lower global amyloid burden compared to those who were taking other diabetes drugs or people without diabetes, after the researchers adjusted for age, sex, education, cognitive status, and APOE4 status. Diabetes patients who were taking DPP-4 inhibitors also exhibited lower regional amyloid burden in temporoparietal areas compared to individuals in other groups. These patients also had slower longitudinal decline in Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores and memory recall subscores, in comparison with patients who were using other diabetes drugs, reported researchers in the journal Neurology… (Medpage Today)
