Impact of weight gain after smoking cessation on myocardial infarction and stroke

eMediNexus    11 January 2018

According to a prospective cohort study published in the European Heart Journal that sought to determine the relation between smoking cessation, post-cessation body mass index (BMI) change and risk of myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke in males, post-cessation BMI change did not remarkably modify the protective association of smoking cessation with MI and stroke. It was reported that in comparison to the sustained smokers, the risk of MI and stroke was considerably decreased in both quitters with BMI gain and without BMI change, but no significant association was noticed in quitters with BMI loss, respectively.
