Mumbai reports first death due to Delta Plus variant

A 63-year-old woman from Mumbai, who had a lung disease, has died due to COVID-19 from the Delta Plus variant. This is the first fatality in the city from the Delta Plus variant. The woman had been administered both doses of the COVID vaccine Covishield.

The woman from the eastern suburbs of Mumbai had died of COVID-19 in July end. Genome sequencing analysis confirmed on Wednesday that she had infection with Delta Plus. This is Maharashtra’s second Delta Plus related death. The state currently has 65 cases of the variant, with 11 in Mumbai.

Dr Mangala Gomare, BMC’s executive health officer, said that people must continue wearing masks and maintain physical distancing. Dr Gomare added that the patient had several comorbidities and an underlying lung disorder.

The patient was detected to have COVID-19 infection on July 21 and passed away on July 27, after spending three days in ICU. Six of her close contacts have also been found to be COVID-positive. Among the samples of the positive contacts sent for whole genome sequencing, two came out positive for Delta Plus while the results of the others are awaited. Her family members are asymptomatic.

Dr Gomare said that the patient had interstitial lung disease and obstructive airway disease and was taking oxygen treatment at home prior to the COVID infection. She had no travel history.
