U.S. FDA authorizes booster vaccine doses for immunocompromised

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given authorization for a booster dose of COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna for individuals who have compromised immune systems.

Some other countries, including Israel and Germany, are likely to or have already started administering the third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to avoid any crisis due to the Delta variant. Scientists are divided over the wide usage of COVID-19 vaccine booster doses among people who do not have any underlying disorders as benefits of the booster dose are still not clear. 

The U.S. FDA has now changed the emergency use authorization for the vaccines and has allowed the administration of a third dose in some people, particularly those who have received a solid organ transplant or those who have been diagnosed with conditions that are associated with a similar level of immunocompromise… (Reuters, August 13, 2021)
