Less than 0.05% of people vaccinated against COVID-19 tested positive after a vaccine shot in India

Close to 2.6 lakh individuals, i.e., 0.048% of over 53.14 crore vaccine doses administered thus far in the country, have tested positive for COVID-19 after receiving at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, stated sources from the Health Ministry.

Among these individuals, 1,71,511 had been administered only one vaccine dose. Breakthrough infections were reported to decline by over 50% for people who received both doses; overall 87,049 cases were reported. Sources revealed that all three COVID vaccines being used in India (Covishield, Covaxin and Sputnik V) appeared to yield similar levels of protection against breakthrough infections.

The government is set to track reports of breakthrough infections from across the country and a digital platform to aggregate data is expected to start functioning from next week. Samples from people reporting breakthrough infections are being obtained from states and genome sequencing is being done to detect virus variants… (NDTV, August 13, 2021)
