16- and 17-year-olds to be offered COVID vaccine by August 23 in England

As per a target given by British Health Secretary Sajid Javid, all 16- and 17-year-olds in England are likely to be offered their first COVID-19 vaccine dose by August 23.

Javid stated that offering the vaccine to individuals in this age group by the said date will give them the required two weeks to develop immunity before returning to school in September.

Britain has recorded over 130,000 deaths within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test, which represents the second-highest number in Europe, following Russia, and is among some of the highest in the world. England has had a wide vaccine roll-out which, according to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, was able to break the link between infections and hospitalizations and fatalities. Over three-fourth of the adults in Britain have been administered two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 89% have received at least one dose… (Reuters, August 15, 2021)
