U.S. to offer COVID-19 vaccine booster shots from September

In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, United States health officials and medical experts stated that booster shots of COVID-19 vaccines will be offered in the fall.

Health officials, including CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky and FDA Acting Commissioner Dr. Janet Woodcock, stated that they will offer booster doses for everyone from September 20 and starting 8 months following the receipt of the second vaccine dose by an individual.

The statement mentioned that protection against severe disease, hospitalization, and death could decrease in the months following vaccination, more so among people who are at higher risk or received the vaccine during the earlier phases of the vaccination rollout. Therefore, a booster dose will be required to maximize the protection extended by the vaccine and prolong its durability… (CNN, August 18, 2021)
